The Department of Safety Engineering at Chang’an University

The Department of Safety Engineering at Chang’an University was founded with the approval of the Ministry of Education in February 2003 and began to offer a four-year undergraduate program in September. In 2007, the second level disciplines of "Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Protection Engineering" and "Construction Safety Engineering" were established under the first level discipline of civil engineering to grant Ph.D. degree and M.S. degree. In November 2017, it passed the engineering education professional certification and was approved to grant M.S. degree in "Safety Science and Engineering". In 2019, "Safety Science and Engineering"became the firstlevel discipline in Shaanxi Province. In the last two decades of development, the department established a good platform in terms of faculty construction, teaching and scientific research conditions, and has about1,000 graduates, 120 post-grads, among them 20 Ph.Ders. We currently have 20 full-time faculty staffs, including 3 professors (2 doctoral supervisors), 9 associate professors (7 master supervisors), 6 lecturers, and 2 engineers. 18 of them  possess Ph.D. titles. And 75% are under the age of 45, a youngvigorous team with great potential for teaching and research. Besides, we have 6 part-time professors and graduate supervisors,1academician of the Norwegian Academy of Engineering, 2 professor-level senior engineers and 2 senior engineers. Its 600 - square meter lab center entails10 professional, innovative laboratories for experiments in safety man-machine, fire and explosion and ventilation engineering.  

Since 2015, our department has undertaken 13 projects byNational Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 projects by China Geological Survey, above 30 other research projects at provincial & ministerial level and 10 projects as grant from National College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship with an average annual research funding of more than 5 million yuan. So far, its long publishing list includes up to 200 high-level academic papers and more than 30 safety science textbooks and monographs. Its gorgeous accomplishment contains over 50 invention patents, utility model patents and software copyrights, one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 6 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 1 Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, multiple national and provincial awards in the National University Challenge Cup Science and Technology Competition, and 6 other industry awards. Meanwhile, the discipline attaches great importance to the integration of production and research. Applications ofacademic results to safety prevention and control of geological disasters, the prevention of ground fissure disasters in subway projects, the risk control and emergency management of underground municipal pipeline networks and frozen roads on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have brought huge economic andsocialbenefits .
