The Department of Surveying and Mapping Science at Chang’an university was founded in 1985. Currently, the department has 60 full-time faculty staffs, including 14 professors, 23 associate professors, 19 senior lecturers and four lab assistants. The faculty also includes one dual-employed academician, two national-level talents, one winner of the special allowance from the State Council, eight winners of the Chang'an scholarships, 53 staffs have obtained doctoral degree, among them, 28 have overseas study experience. It has18 doctoral supervisors and 40 master supervisors.
The department has a first-level doctoral program in Surveying and Mapping and one center for post-doctoral studies. Four second-level doctoral and master degree programs are Geodesy and Survey Engineering, Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and Resource and Environmental Remote Sensing. The department also offers three bachelor’s programs:Geomatics Engineering, Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing Science and Technology. Two teaching teams of Bachelor’s programs have been recognized as the provincial-level star teams. Meanwhile, both Geomatics Engineering and Remote Sensing Science and Technology programs have been accredited by China’s Engineering Education Accreditation Associations (CEEAA) and were correspondingly selected as the national and provincial “first-level” discipline. The program of Geographic Information Science was identified as the provincial characteristic discipline. Overall, the department provides comprehensive programs from bachelor’s degree to doctoral degree, and post-doctoral studies as well. So far, our programs have trained and taught more than 8,000 graduates
Today, the department owns eight research centers and laboratories with one subdivision of the national key laboratory (the National Key Laboratory of Geographic Information Engineering, the Cooperation Department of Chang'an University), one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education (The Key Laboratory of Western Mineral Resources and Geological Engineering of the Ministry of Education), four research and innovation centers and two application platforms (the Beidou Analysis and Service Center of the Ministry of Equipment Development and the Geological Disaster Research Department of the National Remote Sensing Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, etc.). These research centers and laboratories improve and support us to meet major scientific and technical challenges for China’s fast economic and social advancement.
Since 2015, the department has gained research funding of nearly 100 million RMB. Our faculty and research teams have conducted 15 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, among which one major funding and one key funding; twoprojectsof National Key R&D Program of China and seven sub-projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The department is also approved over 50 projects supported by the provincial & ministerial administrations. The scientific achievement of these research programs has won two second prizes by National Scientific and Technological Progress, seven first and seven second prizes by Scientific and Technological Progress under different provincial & associations. Meanwhile, our teaching team and staffs have gained one second prize in the National Teaching Achievement Contest and guided students to win above 38 competitions at national and provincial level. Now, the department has established five distinctive and key research topics: Identification, Monitoring and forecast of Geo-hazard; Beidou/GNSS Navigation, Positioning and Location Services; Crustal Deformation and Active Faults Mechanism Inversion; Investigation, Monitoring of Resource and Environment with Multiple Remote Sensing Techniques; Modelling, Analysis, and Forecast of Spatiotemporal Big Data.
