Between September 23 and 25, 2020, the sixth National Symposium on Rock Physics, sponsored by the Petrophysical Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society and co-organized by Chang'an University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company (PCOC), took place in Empark Grand Hotel, Xi'an to further the application and development of petrophysics in China’s energy and related fields.
This seminar was themed on petrophysics and fluid detection, covering rock physics modeling, rock physics and reservoir parameter prediction, rock physics and anisotropy, microscopic pore structure analysis and application, fracture model and prediction, dispersion and attenuation, shaft rock physics, seismic quantitative interpretation and fluid detection, and shale reservoir evaluation and rock mechanics. It converged more than 160 experts and scholars from all over the country.
At the opening ceremony of the seminar, Guo Jian, Secretary-General of the Chinese Geophysical Society, Zhao Bangliu, Chairman of the Petrophysics Committee and Deputy General Manager of CNPC’s Exploration and Production Branch, Zhang Anxue, Secretary of the School of Information and Communications Engineering of Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Dang Dong, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Chang'an University, delivered speeches on behalf of the Chinese Geophysical Society, the sponsor and the organizers, respectively. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Wang Daxing, Deputy Dean of PCOC’s Exploration and Development Research Institute.
In his speech, Mr Dang expressed his welcome to the experts and scholars who attended the conference, and saw it as a platform for enhancing academic exchanges on geophysical discipline between Chang'an University and peer colleges, research institutes and industries across China.
Subsequently, internationally renowned petrophysicist Professor De-hua Han from the University of Houston and Professor Teng-fong Wong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong gave online reports.
The petrophysical issues, opportunities and challenges got a thorough airing in the session.
Petrophysics, an important branch of geophysics, mainly involves the physical properties of rocks and their genesis. It is widely applied in the analysis of the lithosphere characteristics, oil and gas exploration and production, engineering, environmental protection, disaster prevention and even cosmic science. In the field of energy, petrophysics is an indispensable applied discipline for energy exploration and production, whereby geophysical data are converted into geological parameters of reservoirs, fluids and even oil and gas reservoirs. Its innovative theoretical results, technologies and methods are also appropriate for conventional and unconventional oil and gas exploration and development, while promoting quantitative geophysical interpretation theories, methods and technologies.
Among the 23 professional committees of the Chinese Geophysical Society, the Petrophysical Committee was established in Beijing in January 2016. It aims to spur the basic petrophysical research and its application in energy, engineering and other areas of interest to the national economy, build a platform for academic exchange, resource sharing, talent training and popularization of scientific knowledge, promote scientific and technological innovation in rock physics, and accelerate the application and transformation of relevant achievements. Since its establishment, the committee has actively carried out regional and national academic activities, including the biennial National Symposium on Rock Physics.
