Attending 2021 Annual Conference of Engineering Geology Society of China

2021 Annual Conference of Engineering Geology Society of China, themed “Engineering Geology and Modern Ocean”, was held at Qingdao, Shandong Province from 14 to 17 October. As representatives from Chang’an University, Prof. Peng Jianbing (academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Fan Wen (vice president of the university), Prof. Li Zhenhong (dean of School of Geological Engineering and Geomatics), Prof. Li Tonglu, Prof. Lan Hengxing, Prof. Huang Qiangbing as well as other teachers and students attended the conference.

The topics covered by the conference included: “Ocean Engineering Geology”, “Climate Change and Coastal City Environment”, “Structure and Properties of Rocks and Soils”, “Tectonics and Regional Engineering Geology”, “Surface Process and Mountain Disaster”, “Tunneling and Underground Exploration”, “Geological Hazard and Environment Protection”, “Mega Engineering Projects and Environment”, “Modern Engineering Geology and Novel Construction", "Education in Engineering Geology", etc. In total 15 key lectures, 97 theme lectures and 95 lectures of young researchers and students were presented in the conference.

Prof. Peng Jianbing gave an invited key lecture titled “Mechanism of Ground Fissure Formation at East African Rift Valley areas”. He presented his worldwide cutting-edge research on ground fissures, and discussed on the prospect of future development and key research directions of engineering geology community. Prof. Fan Wen presented his work on “3D Characterization of Loess Microstructure”. Prof. Li Tonglu gave his lecture on “Two Misconceptions about Loess Engineering Properties—Preference Flow and Static Liquifaction”. Prof. Huang Qiangbing made important comments on “Development and Challenges” of the community of engineering geology. Moreover, 9 theme lectures and 18 young-fellow lectures was given, from which PhD students Zhao Junyan, Sun Yuemin, Li Zekun were awarded “Excellent Student Lecture” of young-student academic forum. Besides, undergraduate students, with Dr. Zhang Changliang and Dr. Shi Yuling as advisors, won the first prize of the Science & Technology Innovation Competition for Chinese College Student.

Everyone benefited from this conference, by sharing his recent research outcomes, following the hot-spot topics in the area, extending the academic influence of our department, and improving the competitiveness of our academic groups and individuals.
