In order to enrich the teachers and students’ academic and research activities during the confinement, we initiate the “111” webinar and invite oversea experts to give lectures under the support of “Western geohazards and geotechnical engineering oversea innovation project”. Prof. D.V. Griffiths from Colorado School of Mines, invited by Prof. Ping Li, gave an on-line lecture on “Finite Element Slope Stability Analysis” to our teachers and students on January 8, 2022. More than 140 people attended themeeting.
Prof. Griffiths is an internationally known expert in finite element modelling and geotechnical engineering. In his lecture he talked about and compared several classic methods on slope stability analysis including Taylor’s chart, finite element and limit analysis. He described in details on the application and recent advancement of finite element method as well as its advantages in complex problem modelling and slope parametric optimization. He also shared some of his monographs, programs and algorithms as resources to learn the finite element method. Prof. Griffith had a thorough discussion on the topic with Prof. Tonglu Li, Prof. Ping Li and other colleagues after the talk. The first session of the webinar has been a definitesuccess.
Prof. Griffiths has visited multiple times and keeps firm collaboration with Chang’an University. He cared much about the recent situation of the pandemic in Xi’an and encouraged the students to keep studying and to make progress during the confinement. He welcomes further contacts via email and looks forward to visit our university again and to have face-to-face discussion andcommunications.
