On the afternoon of January 9, 2025, Associate Professor Yang Jizhong from Tongji University was invited to give an academic report titled Full Waveform Inversion of Elastic Waves with Stochastic Gradient Sampling in Room 501 of the Second Teaching Building at the Yanta Campus. Professors Li Qingchun, Bao Ganzong, Shao Guangzhou, Ren Zhiming, Associate Professors Li Xingwang, Zhao Shuhong, Liu Guohua, Qi Yanfu and Xu Shigang from the School of Geology and Geophysics, as well as over fifty teachers and students majoring in geophysics, attended. The report meeting was presided over by Professor Bao Ganzong, the director of the Department of Geophysics of the School of Geology and Geophysics.
Associate Professor Yang Jizhong started from the challenges faced in the full-waveform inversion of earthquakes, analyzed the problems of period jumps, multi-parameter crosstalk, wave-mode coupling and initial model dependence in the full-waveform inversion of elastic waves, and introduced the multi-parameter full-waveform inversion method of elastic waves based on the extended model search space with stochastic gradient sampling The superiority of the stochastic gradient sampling inversion method in the high-precision modeling of longitudinal and transverse wave velocities was verified through multiple numerical examples. Finally, the practical application potential of the relevant methods and the key problems that need to be solved urgently were summarized.

The atmosphere of the report meeting was lively. The teachers and students present had a heated academic discussion with Associate Professor Yang Jizhong on the stochastic gradient sampling full waveform inversion method, the development prospects of full waveform inversion, and the offset imaging of submarine OBN seismic data.
